I was in the market for another portable iPod/iPhone sound dock. Choices at first seem overwhelming but if true portability is what you are looking for it comes down to a few models.

My benchmark is my wife's Bose Sounddock Portable. It just delivers lots of sound and depth for any occasion. From background listening to house party capabilities - the Bose got you covered soundwise and with it's internal batteries it could be set up just anywhere.

But, it's rather pricey at $399 and it's cheaper cousin, the Sounddock II, comes without batteries. Since my wife moved to another country for work she took the Bose and with it some awesome music.

So, naturally I started eyeing other Bose models, namely the SoundLink that is "only" at $299, significant more compact, and thus more portable, and very nifty with it's Bluetooth wireless play capabilities. But, being used to its bigger brother I was disappointed by its shallow sound in comparison. I went to the Bose studio as well as to BB and I just couldn't be convinced by its sound. But what almost convinced me in getting it is its portability.

Then, my eye fell on the other offerings at BB. Clearly, this Altec Lansing speaker stood out of the crowd by its sheer design. It's very compact, light and rugged. While the dock part where the iphone connects looks a bit flimsy, it's not at all. It hides inside the front when transported (e.g. thrown into a bag). This design feature is certainly welcome and something that does remind me of the bigger Bose.

Directly compared to the SoundLink it lacks Bluetooth but is as portable as the Bose one. It won't take up much space on any surface or inside a bag or suitcase. The iphone 4s connects without any problems and the speaker picks up signals from all kinds of music and streaming applications.

Speaking of sound, after many hours of listening to all kinds of music and different settings at home as well as comparing it with other docks on display before my purchase I would rate it as pleasing. It won't drive a party but it's a great choice for background music scenarios. Especially vocals and accoustic instruments are very clear and subtle details are reproduced at all volume levels. I enjoy listening to it most at low to average sound levels. While it can be cranked up to quite high volume levels, it lacks some depth.
I find it very comparable to the sound of Bose's SoundLink. While the latter adds a bit more bass and loudness I don't find both to be worlds apart. My most favorite scenario is streaming radio with its mix of music and talk. The music is always clear as are the voices. With a good data plan (or wlan) this combination can replace any radio you might have at home with the additional benefit of running for hours on battery (how many kitchen radios are truly portable?)

Comparing it to the Logitech Boombox S715i on display, the Logitech dock has a full load of bass enough for a small party. At the same time voices are a bit more muffled and at higher levels distortion was more noticeable. In fact, I don't find distortion to be a problem at all with the Altec. Furthermore, the Logitech is a bit heavier and slightly bulkier since it carries more speakers. Another not acceptable fact for me with the Logitech are its NimH rechargable batteries. One can wait for them to fall short after some loading cycles. The Altec comes with lithium-ion batteries that should last a while.

Playing off batteries I can get sound for hours from the Altec. In fact, I haven't run out of power yet and had it playing 3-4 hours before I took it with me and connected it to the outlet so that it charged my iPhone. I could have got more mileage but when you want your phone to be charging there is no choice than connecting the speaker to the wall. But when my phone's battery is full I enjoy taking the imt 630 everywhere I go in the house. it's so easy to pick it up and carry it around. While it doesn't have a handle it really doesn't need any to safely set it up anywhere.

At a discount, I got it for $107 local retail. That's a lot less than the Soundlink but you get as great a portable speaker if you don't mind the lack of Bluetooth. I wouldn't pay much more for it and in fact, I believe it should be priced at the $99 price level for it to be a no-brainer. I found it to be the most portable speaker available while delivering a pleasing sound experience for my listening scenarios. Vocals and accoustic instruments are clear and dynamic. The design is rugged, nothing to break off the case (okay, with force one could break off the back lid).

It comes with a useful remote. While small it comes with enough functions to control music on iTunes. There is a software EQ and alarm clock app to download for free.

Another alternative might be the older imt 620. On paper it reads as even better sounding than the newer model given its bigger speakers but it might be less compact, too.

I would say, if you are looking for a replacement of a good stereo, this speaker isn't it. If you are looking to replace a kitchen radio with the extra comfort of iPod/iPhone and the great portability and rugged design of this dock, you will be happy. While it isn't a higher end Bose sound experience with their remarkable SoundDock series, it matches the SoundLink series for most cases. And, while I'd be afraid of hauling around expensive Bose gear, this speaker's price and rugged design isn't cause for any concern.
